36 x 60 vs 48 x 96 Tile Backer Board: North American Size and Packaging Guide
North American tile backer board programs commonly start with two sheet formats: 36 x 60 x 1/2 in and 48 x 96 x 1/2 in. Both use a 12.7 mm nominal board thickness, but they serve different inventory, handling, installation, and container-planning needs.
This guide is written for distributors, importers, wholesalers, private-label brands, and construction supply companies comparing the two formats before requesting a quotation.
Quick Specification Answer
ANGESEN's primary North American tile backer board sizes are:
| North American size | Metric reference | Nominal thickness | Typical planning role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 x 60 x 1/2 in | 914 x 1524 x 12.7 mm | 1/2 in | Distributor stock, bathrooms, smaller handling format |
| 48 x 96 x 1/2 in | 1220 x 2440 x 12.7 mm | 1/2 in | Full-height or large-area coverage, project and wholesale supply |
These are the two main inch-designated formats for North America. Other international sizes are normally specified in millimetres, and custom dimensions can be reviewed against the order requirement.
When 36 x 60 x 1/2 in Is the Practical Choice
The 36 x 60 in format gives distributors a smaller sheet that can be easier to organize for bathroom remodeling, shower-wall work, compact storage, and jobs where installers prefer a more manageable board size.
It may be suitable when the buyer wants:
- A North American stock size expressed fully in inches
- A smaller sheet for bathroom and wet-area work
- More pieces per container than a 48 x 96 in program
- Carton presentation for retail, distributor, or private-label handling
- A SKU that can be planned with shower trays, niches, curbs, and accessories
The final board layout and fixing method still depend on the wall or floor assembly. Sheet size does not replace the installation drawing, substrate review, joint treatment, or project requirements.
When 48 x 96 x 1/2 in Is the Practical Choice
The 48 x 96 in format provides a larger coverage area per sheet. It can reduce the number of board joints in suitable layouts and may fit project supply, wholesale stock, large wall areas, prefabrication, and customers already handling standard 4 x 8 ft sheet goods.
Buyers should also plan for the larger physical handling envelope. Warehouse racks, forklift access, carton dimensions, pallet layout, unloading method, and jobsite movement should be reviewed before selecting the format only on the basis of square footage.
Carton Packing for 1/2-Inch Board
For 12.7 mm tile backer board, the normal carton reference is 5 sheets per carton. This is different from thinner 4 mm and 6 mm programs, which are normally planned at 10 sheets per carton.
Carton packing can support:
- Private-label carton artwork
- Product name and specification identification
- Customer brand and logo presentation
- Barcode and order information
- Batch and production-date identification where required
- Distributor handling and SKU separation
Logo printing can be discussed for both the board and the carton. Artwork, print position, barcode data, label language, country-of-origin wording, and carton marks should be approved before production.
Pallet Packing Is a Separate Option
Palletized sheets are packed without cartons. ANGESEN plans the finished pallet at no more than approximately 1250 mm overall height, including the 110 mm pallet, board stack, spacing, corner protection, stretch film, and strapping.
This means pallet sheet quantity should not be fixed from board thickness alone. The actual stack must allow for protective materials and safe handling. A final pallet plan is confirmed from the sheet size, thickness, destination, unloading method, and mixed-container arrangement.
40HQ Loading References
For carton-packed 12.7 mm board, current planning references are approximately:
| Board format | Approximate 40HQ planning quantity | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 36 x 60 x 1/2 in | About 3,450 sheets | Subject to final carton, protection and loading plan |
| 48 x 96 x 1/2 in | About 1,420 sheets | Subject to final carton, protection and loading plan |
These quantities are planning references, not fixed shipping guarantees. Corner protection, wrapping, mixed SKUs, accessories, carton construction, pallet use, load distribution, container condition, and destination handling can change the final quantity.
If an order combines two board sizes or includes shower-system products, the loading plan should be calculated from the confirmed order mix rather than from a single-SKU reference.
Information Needed for a Reliable Quote
Before comparing prices, provide:
- 36 x 60 or 48 x 96 in board format
- 1/2 in nominal thickness
- Estimated quantity or proposed 40HQ SKU mix
- Carton or pallet preference
- Customer logo, board print, carton artwork, barcode, or label requirement
- Straight edge or custom edge-profile request
- Destination market and discharge port
- Required technical, inspection, and shipping documents
The tile backer board product page provides the broader international size program. Buyers planning private-label presentation can review OEM manufacturing, while mixed-container buyers can review wholesale supply.
Selection Principle
Choose the format from the customer's sales channel, warehouse and jobsite handling, wall or floor layout, carton presentation, and container plan. A smaller sheet can improve handling and piece count; a larger sheet can improve coverage and reduce joints in suitable layouts. Neither format is automatically correct for every distributor.
